Our Lady of the Rocks — Gospa od Škrpjela — is one of two islands in the Bay of Kotor, and the only one that is entirely man-made. According to local legend, it was founded on 22 July 1452 when sailors discovered an image of the Madonna on a rock rising from the sea. For centuries afterwards, fishermen kept the tradition of throwing rocks and scuttling old boats to build the island up, eventually creating the platform on which the church was built.

The church itself is a masterpiece of Adriatic religious art. Its interior walls are lined with 2,500 silver ex-voto tablets, each one left by a sailor praying for safe passage or giving thanks for survival at sea. The paintings by Tripo Kokolja are among the finest examples of baroque art in the region.
